THE MISSION

The Global Initiative for Industrial Safety drives the safe adoption of technology to tackle today’s and tomorrow’s industrial safety challenges – advancing a more secure future for every industry.

The Global Initiative for Industrial Safety (GIFIS) unites policymakers, manufacturers, and innovators to put safety at the centre of industrial transformation. We work to foster a global safety culture and advance the technologies and practices that will define safer workplaces of the future.

By guiding the safe adoption of new industrial processes, we accelerate technology-enabled solutions that reduce risks and enhance resilience for workers worldwide.

Through evidence, insights, and thought leadership, GIFIS raises awareness and deepens understanding of emerging risks and opportunities.

We provide a global resource platform and communities of practice that connect experts, industries, and policymakers – turning knowledge into action for safer outcomes everywhere.

At the heart of our work is the Manifesto for Global Industrial Safety, which outlines the roles of industry, government, academia, regulators, and international organisations in addressing global safety challenges – especially those arising from the digitalisation of manufacturing.

MANIFESTO

The Manifesto for Global Industrial Safety.

WHY DO WE NEED A MANIFESTO?

1. It is essential to improve worker safety.

Inadequate safety measures and hazardous work environments result in 2.8 million deaths globally every year. Furthermore, safety incidents in organisations have a significant economic impact, including early retirements, skill loss and absenteeism.

WHY DO WE NEED A MANIFESTO?

2. International recognition of safety and health is a fundamental principle and right at work.

Industrial safety, which is often overlooked, is fundamental to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In June 2022, the International Labour Organization added the principle of a safe and healthy working environment to its Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.

WHY DO WE NEED A MANIFESTO?

3. Technology can make the workplace safer.

Emerging technologies offer new opportunities to tackle global industrial safety challenges, especially as they become cheaper, easier to use and more widely available.

WHY DO WE NEED A MANIFESTO?

4. Industrial safety can be complex.

As industries evolve and incorporate new technologies, they must understand and mitigate a range of potential hazards, from traditional workplace accidents to the risks associated with cutting-edge technologies.

WHY DO WE NEED A MANIFESTO?

5. New technologies are changing global safety needs.

While technology creates new challenges, it also enables new solutions. Increasingly affordable drones, for example, are helping companies to conduct hazardous inspections at high altitudes without putting workers at risk. At the same time, relatively simple sensors and analytics allow companies to pinpoint when machinery needs to be maintained to avoid accidents.

WHY DO WE NEED A MANIFESTO?

6. Developing countries suffer more workplace accidents.

Developing countries are disproportionately affected, with just 10% of the population covered by safety laws. Addressing this discrepancy is crucial, not only for the wellbeing of the workforce but also for fostering sustainable and equitable economic development.

WHY DO WE NEED A MANIFESTO?

7. Integrate industrial safety at every level

Industrial safety should be integrated at every level of an organisation. It is an important concern not just for the shop floor but also at the highest levels of the organisation.

Principles for building a safer tomorrow.

1. Uphold the human right to safe working conditions.

Everyone deserves a safe workplace. Sadly, almost 3 million people die every year as a result of unsafe working conditions. As technology advances in manufacturing, new physical, emotional and safety-related risks are emerging.

2. Ensure that safety considerations are central to all technology-related decisions.

It is important to address and acknowledge the risks that may arise with the introduction of new technologies, including their impact on the mental health of the workforce.

3. Ensure new technology-enabled safety solutions.

New technology can be both risky and helpful, and several solutions have been developed to make workplaces safer, such as high-altitude inspection drones and real-time safety-monitoring apps.

4. Share, monitor and promote safety lessons.

It is essential to share information and knowledge about safety in order to prevent accidents and other risks. When we share real-life data and experiences, we can create smart safety technologies and prioritise safety.

5. Support safety improvements in developing countries.

Everyone deserves a safe and healthy work environment. Unfortunately, many developing countries lack the resources needed to ensure Occupational Safety and Health (OSH).
